Henry Creek Hoofbeats
Sunday May 26, 1996
This ride is in the Grimes Creek drainage of south central Idaho.
Camp is in the trees and open spots on either side of the Henry
Creek road. Due to an early date, the loops will not climb as high
on the surrounding mountains as rides will later in the year and
the creeks may be brim full of snow melt.
Grimes Creek was extensively mined for gold, there are old tailing
piles and other evidence of their work all along the creek and many
of its tributaries. A few claims are still being worked but
logging is the bigger industry now. There is an amazing network
of old and new logging roads through the conifer forests.
Those riders who did Grimes Pass in 1995 may recognize some of the
trails, but there are new ones too. We've found a connection to
an easier ford across Grimes Creek south of ride camp. It had an
old logging bridge until a flood wiped it out.
The area is home to a variety of wildlife, beaver, deer and elk
along with the ravens at the Idaho City landfill. Willows grow in
the creek bottoms, aspen in some of the natural meadows. A fire
wiped out the town of Centerville, but the lilacs by the doorsteps
of the cabins still bloom as do the yellow Paul Harrison climbing
roses.
Our well marked loops will allow you glimpses of all these things
as you travel on logging roads and trails through forested country.
Some deer and elk trails with cross country sections will tie them
together.
Henry Creek Hoofbeats has a variety of distances. Pleasure trail
rides of 8 and 15 miles, a PNER approved ride and AERC sanctioned
50 and 75 miles (can elevate) events. There will be horse water
available at ride camp and along the trail.
