Hey! I use Cosequin, which is Chondroitin Sulfate. It is very similar
to Adequan, except it is fed to the horse instead of injected. My horse,
Sir Revel was horse #25 in a research project done by Auburn University
School of Vet Med, and Dr. Reid Hanson. It was a huge success. Of the
25 horses studied on the trial, all 25 showed marked improvement. It
will be published as soon as the details are worked out.
I do know that from my point of view, I would not be riding my Appy if it
weren't for Cosequin. He has radiographic changes in the fetlock
area--DJD--He was lame in the pasture at a walk for several months. I
figured that retirement was the only choice. With the research project,
and Dr. Hanson's help, I not only have a sound horse, but at the last 50
mile endurance ride that I went to, we came in top 10 and got two 10 on
the BC form. One was for gait, the other was for quality of movement. I
do realize that we will have good days and bad days, but so far, in 155
miles of competition, we have had good days. I think that Cosequin has
had a very big hand in all of this. I spend 140.00 for about 2-3 months
worth of the product, depending on the loading dose, and that is cheap
compared to hauling to a ride and not finishing, or worse yet, not
getting to ride period. Buying another horse is out of the question, not
from a financial point of view, but a space POV, so this is a very
workable option. I have spoken to several vets who all agree that there
is no harm in competing on him as long as I am riding withing his
limitations, and not asked to do something that he can not do. That's
not a problem. So far, 50 mile rides are very doable. Just my .02's.
