Well, here in the cold Northeast we often will lay our horses off mid-Dec
through mid-Feb or later. But mostly because we don't have too much in
the way of choices. This past winter, the snow was either too deep or
the roads/fields were ice-covered.

Given the option I'd lay off for a solid 6 weeks then ride lightly on
weekends to keep them "tuned up".
