I just returned from S2S - I couldn't stay for the
last day. My plan was to ride day by day and see what happened. My
new mare, "E" only had one other 50 under her girth, and that was 8 days
before. We finished in the back of the pack on Mon and Tues- it was really
HOT, took Wed off to rest and eat (she is a little thin, I worry) and went back
out Thurs. Oh boy, did I create a monster.....she was third in
5:03 AND......BC!!! I am so proud. So here is what I learned at
Shore to Shore:
1. Never go to a multiday without a
crew.
2. If they made that trail straight, we would be to
Lake Mich by Wed.
3. Sand hurts when it invades all the places sand
can invade.
4. Wet sneakers should NEVER, repeat, NEVER, be
placed in the cab of a truck.
5. Never go to a multiday without a
crew.
6. If you go to a multi day without a crew,
people will feel sorry for you and feed you.
7. Wear gloves when you ride if you give your horse
a day off and she eats 20 pounds of super-go-grain.
8. It is possible to top five and win BC
even if you only have a Baby Ruth bar, a baggie of EnduroMax, a syringe and a
bottle of water with you all day.
9. Never go to a multi day without a
crew.
10. Riding tights and jog bras will grow into your
skin if you let them.
11. If your horse rolls in the river during the
check, it saves on sponging time.
12. The S2S trail goes completely around every
eighth tree in the state of Michigan.
13. My cheap $180 saddle fits my horse PERFECT-
three days and not a hair out of place (yeah!!)14. Remember tweezers next time - that unibrow look is not
good.
15. Never go to a multi day ride without a
crew
That's my story, I am sure Mary Coleman will have
one - she was leaving out on her fifth day when I started home. She
had Band-Aids and Desitin all over her body!
Laura Hayes AERC#2741 Oh yea, I 'turned' 4000
miles on day two!
