Re: [RC] "I can't see how bareback would help. I too am short and have short legs and am also overweight. " - Typef
I used to teach riding lessons when I was younger and one of the first
things I always did after my students got the general gist of things was to
put them on a bareback pad on the end of a lounge line and gradually get
them confident enough to put their arms out and find their seat.
Years later, my 40-something husband who has thousands of motorcycle riding
miles on him and who was stiffer than a board from banking into motorcycle
turns, was really frustrating me because I just could not get him to find
that seat and learn how to be a belly dancer in the middle. Trying to get
him to pretend his butt belonged to the horses's anatomy and not his was a
losing situation. I finally said, "Ok, that's it. I don't care how scared
you are, get up on that horse without the saddle and figure it out!" It only
took one half-hour session in the arena for him to see what the heck I was
talking about. That was 5 years ago. He still talks about that and tells
people how much it helped him, even though he's never done it again. I don't
think I'd send him out on the trail like that, but it sure did the trick in
this instance.
