[RC] Helmets & fear - Lori Chandler
My neighbor's son recently got kicked in the head just leaning down
removing skid boots.
When I went over to deliver some tamales & visit, he had just gotten the
staples out of his head & I commented, "looks like you got a size aught
over your ear". He said I was about right. Kid is lucky to be alive.
While I'm sure he will never wear a helmet, it got me wearing mine ALL the
time now.
On fear, I was unloaded into a chain link fence a few years ago, breaking
my elbow in 2 places. After that, I found that no matter what anyone told
me, I couldn't seem to keep from tensing up, holding my breath, all that
stuff. There was nothing left for me to do (if I wanted to keep riding)
but to act "as if". So I just kept putting one foot in front of the other,
acted as if I were confident, balanced, relaxed & told myself to let my
brain use the information it had gathered over the years to help me through
the situations I had no control over (like everything). It became more
important to me to get out there & experience life from the back of my
horse than to let my fears stuff me into the background.
BTW I started Sky after this incident, have done all the training myself .
