[RC] Helmets - Sarah Zegers
Hey Jerry - How ya doin'?
You know me; never bashful about causing a stir! So here goes re:
helmets.
It's been said that riders who don't wear helmets have nothing worth
protecting.
Hummmmm . . . any comments?????
Things that made me a believer in wearing a helmet:
1. A friend who lay in a coma for 6 weeks after her horse slipped (at a
walk in an arena) in the mud & fell with her - she was helmetless. She
still has residual problems from the head injury.
2. The death of a rider- veterinarian who mounted a rowdy horse to
subdue it, was thrown & suffered a fatal head injury. He wore no
helmet.
3. My brave and talented advanced eventer friend whose horse reared up &
crashed her head into an obstacle, killing her. She wore no helmet.
(She was long-listed for the Olympics in '84.)
4. The day I landed in a heap in the desert at 20 Mule team, when my
horse did an endo & then ran over my head. I thanked God that I had
worn a helmet that day. Before that I was random about it, but I don't
get on a horse without one now.
Surely the cost & the loss to the friends & families of these
unfortunate riders could have been minimized or prevented by the wearing
of a helmet.
