Well I've had 3 concussions (should I really admit that???) and two were
horse related. One when I was around 10 and was racing with my friends.
All of us were around 9-12 on our ponies. I cut under a tree and didn't
duck low enough and a branch knocked me off. I lived close to the barn and
my pony took me home. I don't remember getting back on....but I remember
being in the back yard and my mom helping me into the house....and that is
about it of that day.
My other horse related one was when I was 25. I had a 2yr old tied up that
I was breaking. We were still on the ground work stage. I was grooming him
and at his shoulder. Something set him off and he started pulling and
trashing against the rope (first and last time he ever did that). Something
hit me.....could have been his head....knee....front hoof....who knows what.
Caught me just over the left eyebrow. Knocked me back into the wall. I
don't *think* I was knocked out...but who knows. I remember leaning against
the wall thinking "sh*t that hurt"! OW OW OW....then the blood filled my
eye and started running down (you know how head wounds bleed). I remember
looking at my truck mirror and seeing my forehead gashed open. Then I
remember getting out of my truck in my driveway (somehow I unsaddled the
colt....turned him back out in the pasture....put up all the
tack/gear.....drove my truck down the hill and re-locked the gate (I was
alone at the barn at that time...place where I boarded)....drove home (not
that far). I do remember getting out of my truck and walking around
it.....hearing someone scream (by that time my white t-shire was all red in
front). Was told later it was a neighbor across the street.... I remember
opening the door a crack and calling to Ed (my hubby at the time....now an
ex). I wouldn't open the door until I explained to him I had a little cut
(don't remember this he told me about it later....I just remember opening
the door). He said I wouldn't let him see me unless he promised not to
freak out (he didn't handle blood well). I do remember him driving me to
the hospital and me with my hands against the dash hanging on for dear life
asking him if he wasn't sure I shouldn't drive..... LOL Luckily I'm
hard-headed! LOL
