(Fwd) Re: RC: LD AND OPINIONS-10k & 20k
Hi guys,
Oooh, have to disagree to some extent here. As a running coach, I
can
tell you that if you want success at the longer distances you will
have to be successful at the shorter distances. No good marathoner
is
a poor 10,000 meter runner, and I know of no great marathoners who
did
not focus upon, and do well at, 10,000 -20,000 meters earlier in their
running careers. A 2:10 marathoner would be expected to run
somewhere
around a 28:20 10K; you will not see a great marathoner who is not
also very, very good at the 10K, and who doesn't race that distance.
Good Lord! If all they raced was marathons they'd break down in no
time. You can look at Kenya's Tegla Larou, who ran 5th in the 10K
and
17th in the marathon at this summer's Olympics. She is the world
record holder in the marathon. Recreational runners may now "race"
the marathon exclusively, with no 10,000 meter background. Almost
all
reasonably good marathoners, though, do also race, seriously,
10,000
meters throughout the year. Beth Glace, MS Research Associate
