Ever hear of "swamp cooling"?  Evaporative cooling is a very common way of
cooling ambient temperature in dry climates. My dad used it in his
commercial greenhouses in California. He would run water through some
fibrous pads along one side of the greenhouse and have huge fans on the
other to suck the air thru the pads to achieve cooling during the summer.
This is in a semi-arid climate.

Since by definition the desert is arid.  Evaporative cooling should be even
more effective, especially in a moving open trailer.  As long as there is
good air circulation, accumulation of humidity is a moot issue compared to
cooling ambient temperature.

I have some reservations about wetting the shavings. Evaporating water

cool the shavings, but it will also raise the humidity of the trailer
making
the horse less effective in cooling himself. I would rather see any
water
applied directly to the horse will it will do the most good in cooling
the
horse. Ice, of course, will have a substantial cooling effect.
