Dorothy,
I really don't know much about GPS, I'd like to have one to play with 
though.  Can you get bounce off canyon walls?
What did your watch say? If the GPS was right on with the map for 20 miles, 
and nearly doubled the distance for your last 10, how long did it take you 
to ride it? I'd trust my watch & sense of timing before any gadget.
