| Miles 18-25 | "Waist" of an hourglass (10 miles of in-and-out common trail). Gradual climb for 7 miles with desert giving way to forest. Water at 20 miles. Spot check (trot-by) at 25 miles; this is the last access to horses by vehicle until Vet Check 2 (35 miles). Water at trot-by. Some rocky stretches. |

| Miles 28-35 | North and East Rim Trail around Newberry Crater. Water at 34 miles. Vet Check 2 at 35 miles; approximate elevation 6700 feet. |
| Miles 35-43 | South Rim Trail. Climb to 7600 feet followed by steep descent. Fabulous scenery of lakes in crater, obsidian flow, and distant Cascade Mountains. Water at 43 miles> |
| Miles 43-46 | Descent continues on jeep roads. |
| Miles 46-47 | Cinder road sufficiently worm for moderate footing. Vet Check 3 at 47 miles |
| Miles 47-53 | Forest roads with short trail sections. Water at 52 miles. |
| Miles 53-56 | Gravel road with good footing on both shoulders. Vet Check 4 at large campground (ride site for Paulina Peak Ride). Lots of room, parking, shade, etc. This is the main "halfway" check. Elevation 4200 feet. |
| Miles 56-65 | Climb to 6200 feet up Paulina Creek Trail. Two wooden bridges. Access to creek at 2 or 3 points for water. Views of several small waterfalls and major overlook of Paulina Falls near top. Vet Check 5 at 65 miles. |
| Miles 65-71 | North Rim Trail. Climb to 7700 feet. Rejoin common trail at 71 miles. |
| Miles 71-74 | Descend from rim to spot check on common trail. Water at spot check. |
| Miles 74-81 | Continue on common trail. Water at 79 miles. Vet Check 6 at 81 miles (same place as Vet Check 1). |
| Miles 81-93 | Jeep road through high desert to Vet Check 7. Water at approximately 86 and 90 miles. |
