Kelli, I just came in on the tail end of this.  Before you pass judgement on
the beef industry and encourage people to stop eating beef so you can "give
them a kick in the pants" regarding horses going to slaughter, you need to
pay alot more attention as to where excess horses are being produced.  Back
yard breeders who breed a poor mare to a lousy stallion because baby horses
are cute.  More breeders who pay attention to hooky ears and a dished
profile, but not to form-to-function.  Race track trainers of any breed who
use horses as disposable machines if they can't win and earn money.  Show
horse breeders who breed hundreds of mares a year to keep only a dozen or so
of the "perfect" ones.  More owners and trainers that insist on competing
horses when they're two or three years old, then send them to the sale if
they break down.

Your enthusiasm is laudable, but your aim a little misguided.  The beef
industry is not the cause of horses going to slaughter.
