feeding
Hi,
I have a 12 yr. arab gelding. I have been using him for endurance. He has
over 1000 mi. The problem I seem to be having is trying to get weight on him.
I laid him off for 3 months thinking he would put on weight. He didn't. He
gets alfalfa in the am, then turned out on 3 acres of pasture for 6 hours or
more, then brought back in and given more alfalfa and 2lbs of soaked beet
pulp, "Life Junior" 3lbs (hoping to fatten him up) and 2 cups of corn oil. As
far as I can tell he hasn't put on any weight. I started getting him ready
for the season in Jan. He doesn't have any problem eating, after all he does
"eat like a horse!" He will be doing his first ride in March. I know he won't
have any problem doing it but I would like him to have some fat to fall back
on. Does anyone have any good ideas on what to do? He gets wormed every
other month.
I would appreciate any advice.
Thank you,
Keri
