I would recommend setting your goal for the shorter distance (40 km, if I'm
doing my math right, that's about 24 miles). If you can do a shorter distance
your first time out all the better. Preferable to do several shorter
distances than an 80 km (48 miles) your first yr.
I've found it took a good yr or more of conditioning before my horses could
complete the shorter distances without fill in their legs (were fit
metabolically within a few months). After finishing some 40km's in good
shape, a nice step us is a 2 day 80km, if that's available.
Hope to hit 3000 miles next yr with the mare, her son will probably get over
1000 miles next yr, so in my experience, starting slow works out in the long
run (they've been very sound (knocking furiously on wood)).
