I don't know how correct this is, but it is as good as anybody else's guess as
to why dogs roll in aromatic stuff. 

 My understanding of the activity is the dog is not trying to get the other
stink on himself, but trying to put HIS/HER oder on the offending pile.  Why
they can't just pee on the offending stuff and call it a good marking is
beyond me!
