I use a sidepull on my sister's Arab gelding. He can be very high headed
and will on occasion throw his nose at a bit in an effort to get more rein.
He doesn't do this in a sidepull, though his head is still in Cloud City.
The sidepull has great lateral control, but absolutely no vertical flex in
it at all, in other words it does fine for taking his nose away and flexing
into a nice bend, but forget even trying it with a running martingale. On
the whole, I like it. The one I use has a noseband made from a double piece
of waxed lariat-type rope over the nose and a leather band under the nose.

"... and God sought to bestow upon man a supreme mark of his blessing, God
created the horse. The horse could run faster than the deer, jump higher
than the goat, and endure longer than the wolf. Man, being encompassed by
elements that sought to destroy him, would have been a slave, had the horse
not made him king."
