I used to write each registry individually and beg for breed awards.  I
got everything from a pen set form AQHA, a key chain from Morgans HA,
etc.  What I did when I was trying to push this was announce that I would
have a "First Whatever" award for EVERY breed that I knew was coming.

I went to a feedstore that specialized in coon dogs and had a machine
that makes the name plates for collars.  They charged me about $1 to make
a brass plate that said, "1st Appaloosa (mule, paint, TWH, etc) 
Tennessee Spring Ride 1988"  I figured that if I won that, I'd be happy
to rivet it to my horse's halter.
