To equestrians in the larger San Francisco Bay area: you are invited to
attend the 17th Annual Horse Course, with the theme "The Traveling
Horse," will be presented on Saturday the 15th of January, 2000.
The Marin Horse Council and the Marin Humane Society jointly sponsor
this event, held on the grounds of the Humane Society at 171 Bel Marin
Keys Blvd., Novato, 20 miles north of San Francisco. Easy access from
Hwy. 101 and ample parking is available.
Jim Jones, Ph.D., of UC/Davis will give the keynote address at 9
a.m. about research on horse transport with specifics on trailer
ventilation, suspension, positioning the horse inside the trailer, etc.
At 10 a.m. a Panel Discussion will be held, including Diana Thompson
(noted horse handler and author), Joel Bartlett (TV weatherman and
horseman), three equine veterinarians, a legal expert, a professional
horse trailering expert, and others will talk about travel regulations,
proactive health maintenance, legal questions, trailer maintenance, and
environmental/weather factors. Audience participation will be invited.
Other presentations during the day will cover water, feed, rest stops,
stress reduction, and how transportation affects performance. Lectures
will be over about 2:30 pm. At 3 pm a trailer loading demonstration
will be given at the Dennis Reis Ranch in Petaluma.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. with coffee and donuts provided by the
Middle Marin Hunt Pony Club. Fees are $15. for adults and $5. for
students (16 and under). Lunch will be provided at 11:45 by the Marin
Horse Council for $5.00 (includes beverage). There will be other
exhibits and demonstrations during the day.
