your question
Dear Cindy,
I think what the folks who advised you against Arabs are referring to is
the usual Arabian show-ring conventions - TRAINING fashions - rather than
intrinsic "gaitedness". Although it has been argued that historically some
purebred Arabs (some of the early Kellogg Davenports come to mind) have had
gaits other than walk, trot, and gallop, from the general tone of what the
people said to you I suspect they meant "park" when they said "gaited".
I urge you to contact the Arabian Sport Horse Association International
(ASHAI) before you rule out using an Arabian for the hunter/jumper
disciplines. ASHAI was in Virginia last time I knew . They'd be especially
equipped to answer your questions about Arabs in sport-horse disciplines.
Maybe another ridecamp participant will help you out with their address,
maybe they have a web page.
Good luck!
-Olivia
