Hey, it's not a perfect world. We see new vets join the sport...and we
watch them mature into really good vets...but there is a learning process
they go through. They have no prior experience to fall back on, and tend
to err on the side of caution.
There is some advantage to being someone the vet knows. No, not because
they'll "do you a favor", but because they know you and have seen you
compete week after week. They know when you're telling them something
about your horse whether you are a person who'll hide things from them,
or a person who will tell all, and then follow any advice they give you.
It's even better when it's a vet you've ridden with on the trail and they
know your horse. There are some people the vet can tell, "take it easy"
and they will. There are some who'd wait only until they got out of
sight of the vet check.
Darned right I'm going to a vet who knows me if possible. (can't think of
any who have a reason for a grudge). At the Hahira ride I was being
vetted by Duane Barnett. By giving me a completion, he moved my horse
ahead of his in the year end points standings. I trust Duane to be fair.
Duane (I hope) trusts me. There's been more times than one that the vet
who knows me and my horse has told me to speed up.
