What I do with our horse's is when I go into a ride I look at the over all picture. If we are doing 5 days or 1 day or a 100 its all in pacing, diet, shoeing, conditioning, etc.... My horse Katie just started back up in Nov. Had laid her up due to a splint bone removal in July. Katie still ended up with 1425 miles this year. I always due my homework on my horses. I try and keep the nutrition as balanced as possible to match up with the horses work load. I also keep my horse's a little on the fat side. I don't like going into any ride especially a 5 day (250+ Miles) or a 100 ride with a thin horse. As I started putting Katie back to work (slowly) I ended up starting her back into a 1 day 50 at Sunland ride. Then two weeks later did the NV Silver State 150 (3 days) at moderate speeds. I put the horses in the trailer in NV and took them straight to Around the Mountain ride in NM (700 miles). There we did a slower 60 and the next day my Katie was feeling great so I place 4th that day. Our horses seem to do better by each day out. Stronger and happier day by day. Of course I don't top ten everyday nor expect it. That is why I'm on my 4th year on Katie and my husband and Lady are too. Tammy & Katie Bar The Door (120 miles for yr 2000 already!)
