A preliminary philosophical excursion:
The one error I think I'm seeing in many endurance conditioning protocols is
lack of intensity in exercise. Carefully applied intensity is more quickly
recovered from than volume, allowing for more frequent "hard" days and a more
rapid acquisition of cardiovascular fitness. Since volume is difficult for
most to accomplish on a regular basis, this might be a better approach,
particularly during the competitive season.
What this would entail is training at higher heartrates, perhaops in interval
sessions or multiple 10 or 20 K distances. Basically, an endurance ride is
not one long slog, but a series of shorter exercise bouts separated by a
significant recovery period. Targeting the longest leg of an upcoming ride,
and targeting a faster rate of speed for that leg, you might achieve a higher
level of fitness, safely and more quickly. The mnicycle should likely come
out to be every four days, with body weight the determining factor for
bringing on the next "hard" day.
