I am interested in responses to Cathy's inquiry about the differential in
working heart rates and recoveries between her mare and gelding. My mare
(a Morgan) also easily gets into high heart rates (over 190--occasionally
over 200, but I get nervous and back off) when working up hills. We
haven't competed (intend to this spring) but she is in good shape (five
years of regular trail riding), loves to go, great work ethic. A couple of
times, while out with buddies (riding Arabs), we have compared readings on
our HRM's. My mare's working heart rate is clearly higher, but she
recovers quickly, generally comparable to her riding companions. I did
take her on one competive trail ride, and she finished first in the novice
division against about ten other horses (I think they were all Arabs). I
had been a little concerned about her heart rate as I plan for doing longer
distances this spring........
