RE: Feed
Thanks for your reply. I am going to try the garlic anyway. We do not get
beet pulp (from what I read about it I wish we could!) . Most prepared
feeds are aimed at the race horse and show jumping comunity....here if you
do endurance you do not love your horse so why would you need a specialized
feed?!!!!!
Bye Celeste

Hi Celeste-
Several people I know feed garlic- prepared mix or fresh crushed.
only 2 say it works to repel flies (and ticks?) but it certianly is safe
and worth a try. also maybe try feeding cider vinager- work up to 1
cup/day. I"ve tried both and didnt see any change unfortunately.
we live in the swamps of S. Georgia so have lots of bugs. dont know of
anything good for ticks except trying to scrape them off before they have a
chance to dig in and thats not always possible. one of my horses (the one
I'm competing naturally) is very sensitive to ticks and gets big abscesses
that seem to come up before each ride...
your post about feeding- sounds sensible to me. the more roughage the
better- as long as its decent quality. why are the prepared feeds such hi
protien? and its safe to feed corn or any veg. oil up to 2 cups/day to all
horses. how about beet pulp? is it available in S. Africa? guess we dont
realize how good we have it being able to run to the feed store and pick up
grain and hay.
Happy riding!
Anita Carlson
