There were studies at Washington State about 20 years ago that looked at 
muscle glycogen on endurance horses post-competition via biopsy.  Many were 
depleted or near depletion, but the horses were having no problems 
maintaining blood glucose or energy levels, as I recall.  I don't remember 
what other parameters, if any, were studied.
