Ahem. My Tufts degree is in Latin. But then, my LAtin professor always
stressed that word order was much less important in latin than in English
<G>.

My mom still has my grandmother's Masters degree, from Willamette University
in Salem, Oregon, circa 1909. I haven't laid eyes on it for awhile so can't
remember the language in which it was written (considering that is in foreign
languages, and one of Grandma's languages was Latin, I doubt if it bothered
her ability to read it), but the thing that interested me was that it was
written on actual sheepskin--hence the old phrase about "earning your
sheepskin." BTW--this lady had a minor in mathematics along with her
language major. She married a few years after earning her Masters, continued
teaching through having 4 kids, was widowed prior to the Great Depression,
and managed to provide a fairly decent life for those 4 kids by teaching
German, Latin, and calculus in a small-town high school. (Needless to say,
the concept of women not being particularly fragile or helpless was not a
recent concept in our family--my other granny was equally talented and
self-sufficient...)
