We had a horse whose stomach looked like a water balloon hanging from a
stick (his spine). He'd trot down the trail with it swinging from side
to side, the vets kept asking when he was due. He did 1500 miles, all
50's except for one 100, middle of the pack. He never had to be treated,
only one pull for a stone bruise. He didn't have a layer of fat, just
had a big belly.
The only problem was that he needed a crupper at all times because the
saddle would work forward, but on the good side, his belly was so big the
breast collar was totally unnecessary. Just consider it extra water
carrying capacity.
