Re: New Baby...Need Input!
Hello Happy in PA,
We have a young colt, too. Obtained him last year as a weanling. We have
let him run with the 2 yr. old fillies and a couple of other mares most of
this year. He has been very submissive and I think they have pretty much
kept him in his place. He has always been gentle and loving and willing to
be handled everywhere, go anywhere, do anything we ask (he's Egyptian,
too!). We put him in this fall with a gelding and a bred mare just to be
safe. He finally starting acting more like a "boy" the last couple of
months. Not studly but just more lively, I guess. We had a heck of a time
getting nice pictures of him because he's so laid back, he simply exhibited
no pizzaz. The farm where we bought him keeps young stud colts with the
mares, at least for a time when they are young to learn some manners. It
seems to have worked. Our older stallion (5) was raised this way and I
think his training and general handling have been easier because of it. I
would also like to try some ponying with our colt next year so am
interested to hear what others may have to say about that. I don't want to
do alot with him in that regard but feel it might give him a positive
start... he is awfully smart and is going to need time and attention to
keep him out of mischief. I used to simply take him with me for walks when
he was a little baby... haven't done it lately but don't see why I couldn't
continue. Besides, I could use the exercise, too! :)
