Beginning conditioning
I got a new horse last month. She's a 6 year old mare who's
well under saddle but has little trail mileage. At the
moment we're getting to know each other and working on some
basics (mostly for my benefit). After the holidays I want
to begin more conditioning work. I like to ride every
day -- is that too much? Is it better to ride 2 or 3 days
and then have a day off? What about alternating arena work
and trail work? When starting out is it better to ride more
often but shorter duration, and then as distance and/or
speed increases give more rest time? I'd love to hear how
you all start your new horses.
Thanks!
SusanB
