There may come a day (and there may not) when the competitive part of 
competitive trail riding becomes important to more than just a few. When that 
day comes, the kind of mileage mentioned will become routine--for the top 
competitors. Right now, why bother? If the competition thinks racing them 
into shape with half-distance rides is appropriate conditioning, the best 
economics would appear to be building and selling reasonably fit horses. Ring 
a bell?
