Basically, you feed the work and body weight. Smaller horses perform less 
work covering the same ground at the same speed as larger horses--less mass 
to move, less total energy required.

But a hard working small horse could require--would require--more energy 
intake than a stalled larger horse. Basically, we feed to maintain or gain 
lean muscle mass during training and racing.
