Hi John & Sue,
for one or another (non-sporty) reason, I personally like long holds. As
taking breakfast and other stuff... But I remember single experiences,
when my horse and me became a little bit annoyed taking hold after hold
eyery two hours. For some reasons, we have a lot of holds in German
endurance rides, and to some extend I understand people - with fitter
horses than mine - who wants to get rid of their abundance. But holds on
a 40-miler should not designed on basis of a 100-miler-champion-horse.
I estimate, no ultramarathoner (human) will understand the "hold-concept"
of our equine discipline. An ultramarathoner, forced to 1 hour rest,
would have some problems to come along again... maybe this is one of the
few reasons where horses are really, and remarkable, different from
humans...
