We had a Danish au pair live with us for a year.  Her aunt was a stable
owner who boarded horses and instructed.  Heidi was always surprised that
Americans DIDN'T feed bread to their horses (at the time, I had never heard
of it).  Her aunt's stable had an on-going arrangement with the local bakery
to deliver the day-old bread to the barn for the horses!  There were
literally cartloads of bread which the horses got daily, in addition to
their regular feed/hay/pasture!
