Re: RC: Re: Bread
"It isn't exactly a feed of choice, but as a small part of the diet, it
certainly won't hurt them. It isn't uncommon to feed leftover bread to
horses in many parts of Europe. Most bread is primarily wheat (some have
other grains, too, obviously) so it is really just extremely processed
grain.
It just isn't the most balanced and palatable grain for horses. Most
nutritionists that I've dealt with don't like to use wheat as more than
about
a quarter of a given grain ration."
I have fed bread before. Up to a couple of loaves at a time to each
horse. Of course, I make sure that the horse isn't a pig about it before
I go dumping bread on the ground. They love it! One of mine will just
about run you over for Rye bread and she is the most mannerly horse on
the place and has been every stable she has been kept at. For a horse
that is a hard keeper I find that the bread helps to keep weight on them.
Of course, it depends on why they are a hard keeper.
