He'll want a shoe with a slight heel (for safety - keep foot from hanging up in a stirrup in a fall) or safety cages on the stirrups. He wants something that he's comfortable in when walking/running. They should dry out quickly if (WHEN) they get wet. They should start out a little wide since his foot will swell after many hours in the saddle. Lastly, they need to easily fit into the stirrups - a safety issue again.
My husband & I both have wider feet. We <really> like the "Horse Shoes" by Roper. They are a riding sneaker, well made, ALL leather (even the ankle cuffs) unlike the competitors (where the cordura wore away too quickly). Price-wise they are quite competitive - base model is around $70, less from some horse catalogs and Sheplers.
