HYPP can be detected with a genetic test, which also shows if the horse is
heterozygous for the trait (has only one gene for it) or homozygous (has two
genes for it). Clinically one can get some idea about it by checking
potassium levels during a cramping episode. This problem only occurs in
certain lines of Quarter Horses, and most folks who have horses of those lines
are doing the genetic test now.
