straw buildings

A friend of mine is building a brand new barn and in a few years is
planning to add an indoor arena.  I have always been fascinated with
straw construction ( have seen a lot of it in the SW).  Does anyone
know if this would be appropriate in more extreme climates like
Michigan's Upper Peninsula.  Would love to hear if anyone up here has
ever used it.
