We are just starting our 2nd barn- what we learned from the first -
- pave the aisle and put down mats
- you can never have enough storage space
- wood is for houses not stalls - (boy it was beautiful the first day !)
What we are doing again - 12' center aisle, hose bibs at both ends of the
barn, stall guards or dutchdoors for socializing, light and outlet at each
stall, lots of light down the center, insulate the ceiling , mats in the
stalls, a roof on the tackroom adding storage space above it.

This is where we find that each person's desires are different.... I have two
of my eight stalls with mats and I hate them. They stay wetter and acually, I
use more bedding than in my packed sand/clay stalls. I also would not be
satisfied with a 12' aisleway, I prefer 14' I also like sliding doors, I feel
that dutch doors, or swinging doors are more dangerous, I don't like anything
sticking out in the aisleway. My stalls are very light and airy, you can see
thru my barn, front to back with no problems. The only stall I have with a
solid stall divider is the stallion stall. I also don't like MOST paved
aisleways, I think they have a tendancy to be slick for shod horses. My
aisleway is packed sand/clay. It is a little dustier in the hot summer, I
just spray it down every so often. But, as I say, barn needs are different
for different people and for different areas of the country.
