startup organizations

I am in need of some immediate information regarding how breed
associations and other discipline specific organizations got started.
Groups like AQHA, AHSA, AERC, etc.  If anyone out there can provide some

backround for me I would greatly appreciate it!!

In the very first years did they charge membership fees, or were they
founded and formed by a group of individuals focused on a common goal?
How much voluntary labor was involved versus a 'paid' staff.....How many

organizations still do not have paid administration?
