I'm adding:  I think that some remarks can be interpreted as racist
without the speaker (writer) intending them to be that way.  In other
words, *sometimes* racism is in the eye of the beholder (ear of the
hearer, whatever).  I've got friends "of color" that joke to me about
honkeys, gringas, etc. (I are one, whatever term you use) and I can joke
back the same way - our remarks in this context *are not* racist per se,
that is remarks which are intended to hurt.  Printed on Ridecamp, these
very same remarks would come out very badly.

Don't you think that this is what happened with Howard's remark?  Lif
