You are so right. Easy to get into trouble following advice that sounds good. I sent this post to a friend who wrote back to tell me: "I had also used a belly rope many many years ago with terrible consequences. The horse in question pulled back, sat down with all it's weight pulling at the rope . The rope got so tight that the horse fell over, passed out (really) and started bleeding through it's nose. The knot had become so tight that I couldn't get it undone and had to run a long way to the house for something to cut it with. Never again !!!!!" ----- Original Message ----- From: Teddy Lancaster <teddy@runningbear.com> To: Karen Sullivan <greymare@jps.net> Cc: <ridecamp@endurance.net> Sent: Friday, November 19, 1999 10:59 AM Subject: RC: Re: Pulling Back > Tied properly with not too much rope, this would be impossible. > > Too many "experts" out there and not enough experience CAN kill a horse... > > Teddy > > Karen Sullivan wrote: > > > -----Original Message----- > > From: Teddy Lancaster [SMTP:teddy@runningbear.com] > > > > I found a good way to help teach a horse NOT to pull back. Reason I ask, someone I know send a horse that repeatedly pulled back to a trailer to break it of the habit. Trainer used the belly-rope through the halter trick and sure enough, horse threw itself back and broke it's neck. > > -- > Teddy Lancaster > AERC# 139422 - Member since 1974 > 6000+ career miles > > ================================================ > Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; > Courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen. > > -- Winston Churchill > ================================================ > > Running Bear Farm, Inc. > Your Trail Riding Equipment Headquarters - Celebrating our 20th Anniversary!!!! > Teddy Lancaster, President > 1348 Township Road 256 > Kitts Hill, Ohio, 45645 USA - http://runningbear.com/ > USA East co-chair.
