I have a real live telephone pole in my horse pasture. Works great for tying
a "rookie" to. When my yearling was about 4 months old I started tying him
to that (with his buddy comfortably near by) no danger of pulling that sucker
down. (He has never pulled back though). Another thing that seems to adjust
their attitude is to LEAVE them tied up for long periods of time. Of course,
you can't leave them alone, so I bring a book and a lawn chair and hang out
for a couple of hours. Kind of a nice excuse to catch up on a good novel.
When Chance is finally going to rides, standing tied for long periods of time
won't be quite such a shock to him. After one of those long sessions, he
will immediately stand hip-shot when he gets tied -- prepared for a long
stint, I guess. I'm pretty sure my neighbors think I'm some kind of wacko
though -- there I sit in my horse pasture with the youngster tied to a
telephone pole and me reading my book. I'm sure the non-horsey neighbors
wonder about me!
