Although there is controversy over strangles treatment, I still feel more
comfortable using sulfas in treatment, as abcesses will go ahead and form and
break, instead of just being repressed as they are by penicillin. Once the
abcesses are open and draining, I don't think it matters so much.
As to letting the disease "run its course"--there are many things you can do
in early phases, such as provide antiinflamatory drugs, etc., that can
greatly improve the outcome, even if you don't jump right in and start the
horse on antibiotics.
