Re:Vetting
Carol Willcocks carolwillcocks@hotmail.com
Interesting reading the posts on vetting. We here in Western Australia are loath to complain about our vets too loudly, as there is a shortage of vets who are willing to attend endurance rides. I think we need to encourage vets to work at rides, but I don't believe we need to put up with really bad vetting. By this I mean inconsistent and obviously biased. Of course, this is not the norm, but unfortunately, the very good vets are often unavailable due to outside committments, and the others are used by ride organisers because of the fact that they make themselves available. There have been many complaints this season, but what to do? Nobody is game enough to say anything because this then becomes a personality conflict (and let's face it, they are THE VET - ie: GOD). Should we not have some type of list or standard to which the vets measure up to? Who are they answerable to? Particularly if they are new out of school, wouldn't it be better to have them work separately and under the guidance of an experienced vet? Do you in the US have some sort of system of accreditation for endurance vets?
Cheers
Carol
