Strangles
About two years ago I had my young mule gelded. About a week later he
developed the "snots." Then my youngest mare (6YO) got the snots. A week
or so after that, the two older mares (one 16, the other 9) both got
full-blown strangles (neither had strangles previously). Vet swore no cases
had been reported locally (this was in January), none of the equines had
been off the property since October, so who knows where it came from....
Sue in California (who wouldn't use the IM vaccine because of potential side
effects, but may consider the nasal one....)

We once had a horse come home from a ride with Strangles and 4 or 5 of our
horses got it. The 3 year old we had died from it.
I used to not get my horses innoculated because they would be lame and sore
from the shot for weeks and I had no young horses. Older horses are said to
be immune. I don't know if that is true or not. However, with the new
nasal
spray, which my vet says is very effective, I now give strangles. Marybe
