Here's my experience with Strangles. My (currently 23 year old gelding --
owned him his entire life) had strangles as a 4 year old (after being
vaccinated). Verrrrrry bad case. THEN he got it again (after accidentally
being "vaccinated" for strangles by my vet at age 20 -- I wasn't there and
she forgot NOT to vaccinate. My gelding got a horriffic case of strangles,
almost killed him -== high fever, reallllly disgusting usurpurating pustule
type icky stuff (blech). Soooo, are they immune once they get the disease?
NO!!! Are they immune once vaccinated? NO!!! We do the best we can,
but...... who the heck knows?? I am totally in favor of the intra nasal
vaccine -- it is all I will give (not to the gelding who has had strangles
though). the intra nasal seems to have none of the really nasty side effects
that I've seen with the other . I may be dealing with a horse who is
totally over-sensitive and (of course) I'm waaaay paranoid. However, if
you've ever nursed a horse through strangles, you tend to be a bit
over-protective!
