A Coggins test is a test for antibodies to Equine Infectious Anemia. It's
named after Dr. Coggins who originally developed the test. There is no
vaccine for EIA so the only means of control is to test and eliminate
carriers.
As for strangles--the recovered horse DOES have immunity, but it is not
permanent. In an endemic situation, though, the horse is constantly
reexposed, which tends to serve as a "booster shot" for the recovered horse
and keep his immunity up. In areas where strangles is NOT endemic, one
should consider vaccination again a year or two after recovery.
