For some rides this practice is a NO-NO. For others, I would say it depends
on ride management. We have designated spots where crews are urged to help
their riders. While I can't remember that AERC has any rules against this
practice, I (as a ride manager) instinctively resent crews who know their way
around the trails of our particular ride going out to help their individual
ridersn in undesignated spots. It gives unfair advantage over the other
riders, but I don't always say or do anything about it. It rather depends on
whether the crews accessed the trail by public road or whether they have
attempted to go 'way off into the "high country" to reach the riders. The
former I wouldn't comment about; the latter I would consider unacceptable and
would tell the crews as much.
