I went to look at a 5 year old recently gelded stallion (Merlyn for those
who are wondering) for a friend and he did this.  He was tied to a post
(loosely) and we set a 6 lb. Wintec saddle on his back and had not
tightened the girth.  He sort of moaned, then dropped like he was shot. 
He just lay there moaning with his nose lifted off the ground where it
was tied to the post.  It did wonders for bringing the price down.  I
think I gave about 1/2 what they were asking.  He turned into a super
endurance horse, but he was cold backed.  One other time he went over
backwards after we set a saddle on him.  Funny thing was, he would never
rear, or try to break a rope, and seemed sort of shocked and baffled
afterwards.  There were only those two incidents in the last 7 years. She
has  completed a 100, and had a win and three BC's in 50's with him.  He
had the best recoveries of any horse I've ever seen...so I doubt the
heart was involved.
